Creative Writing Requirements
Note: For non-English major students preparing for BYU's MFA program in creative writing.
In addition to completing the Creative Writing minor, non-English major students are strongly encouraged to take Engl 295 and at least one additional 300-level English literature seminar.

Note: The English Department requires a minimum of 12 hours of course work to be taken in residency at BYU for this minor program.
Recent UA Creative Writing majors have put their degree to use in a wide variety of careers, including screenwriting, editing, publishing, technical writing, video game design, marketing, journalism, teaching, business, and professional writing.
If you wish to develop skills in writing nonfiction prose — journalism, personal essays, etc.These hours may also go toward BYU's 30-hour residency requirement for graduation.In addition, English majors may count up to 9 credits of their Creative Writing minor coursework toward English major requirements.Students majoring in Creative Writing may take introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry, as well as courses in literature, language, literary analysis, publishing, and elective courses in a range of topics in the research specialties of our internationally renowned faculty.Creative Writing majors are prepared for careers after graduation through access to a large and growing internship program, courses in writing and publishing, access to many of today’s most important and influential writers, a Professional and Technical Writing certificate program, special career development events, a study abroad program in London, and a competitive English Honors program.See the English Department for further information.Description Creative Writing majors develop their writing craft under the guidance of award-winning writers in small workshop settings in creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry.Students also take four classes in upper-division (300- or 400-level) literature courses, at least two of which are in modern or contemporary literature.Please see the UAccess advisement report or the English department course descriptions to determine which courses count for the modern or contemporary literature requirement.Four-Year Plan The following represents one of many paths you can take to complete a major in creative writing.Note that students typically take four courses per semester for a total of eight each year.
