Published annually since 1986, each year’s collection offers a treasure trove of essays published in American literary journals and magazines the previous year.
For example, edited by Jonathan Franzen is comprised of essays published in 2015.
If you’ve had an essay published in a literary magazine in 2016, it’s worth the effort to make sure that your work is considered for .
If you were published in a print journal, there’s a good chance the editors of that journal sent issues directly to Best American Essays editors for consideration.

In addition to a cover letter, I included a separate “full citation” page with my contact information, name of publication, and date of publication so that the editors could find my information “at a glance.” Questions?

Feel free to use it as a model for your own cover letter.As this year draws to a close, I want to share with you a Best American Essays submission tip that I first learned from my mentor Sonya Huber.If you’re not yet familiar with The Best American Essays series, you are in for a treat.Let me know in the comments, and I’ll get back to you.The International Neuroethics Society (INS) is pleased to announce a call for submissions for the 2019 Neuroethics Essay Contest.Now in its sixth year, the contest aims to promote interest in neuroethics among students and postdocs from around the world.Participating authors can submit essays in one of three categories: One winner from each category will be selected in August and recognized at the 2019 INS Annual Meeting in Chicago—the premier gathering of professionals dedicated to neuroethics.This new category aims to promote interest in neuroethics among secondary school students around the world.Winning essays in the High School category will be jointly published on the INS website and featured in the IYNA Journal, website, and newsletter.(Submission guidelines also are included in the forward of each volume.Always use the guidelines from the most recent volume.) A couple of pointers to keep in mind as you prepare your published essay(s) for submission to Best American Essays: • Print your essay directly from the online journal it was printed in so that the BAE editors receive a print copy of the essay as it appeared in the journal.
