Brian is forced to crash-land the plane in a lake--and finds himself stranded in the remote Canadian wilderness with only his clothing and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present before his departure.Brian had been distraught over his parents' im Brian is on his way to Canada to visit his estranged father when the pilot of his small prop plane suffers a heart attack.The pilot has pain in his shoulder, arm, and stomach. One day a plane flies overhead but does not see him andcontinues, leaving Brian devastated and hopeless. Lying in bedone night, it occurs to Brian that he could find survival pack in the body of the plane, andhe determines to build a raft to do so.After many incidents, Brian retrieves the survivalpack from the plane.At one point he drops the hatchet to the lake's bottom, but retrievesit with a long dive.
