What Is A Succinct Thesis
Just as the contents of the essay may change during the writing process, so, too, may the thesis statement.
It is important to create a thesis statement before writing the paper, but this type of thesis is generally referred to as a working thesis and may change along with the contents of the essay.
It should present the topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic.
Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and keep your argument focused.
Shape your topic so that you can get straight to the "meat" of it.
Being specific in your paper will be much more successful than writing about general things that do not say much.
What this thesis does not address, because of the nature of the essay and topic, is a specific audience.
Never assume that the meaning of a sentence is obvious. The following are qualities of a well-crafted thesis statement: "In order to succeed in the classroom, college students need to utilize the resources available to them throughout their academic careers." Notice how this thesis statement includes a specific audience (college students), a specific purpose (success in the classroom) and the specific way this can be accomplished (utilizing available resources)."The United States government needs to implement a nationalized healthcare system to lower the cost of healthcare and improve the overall health of all citizens." Notice how, much like the above example, this thesis statement also has a specific purpose (lowering the cost of healthcare and improving health) and a specific way to do so (implementing national healthcare).Compare this original thesis (too general) with three possible revisions (more focused, each presenting a different approach to the same topic): Your thesis statement is no exception to your writing: it needs to be as clear as possible.By being as clear as possible in your thesis statement, you will make sure that your reader understands exactly what you mean.Normally you will continue to refine your thesis as you revise your argument(s), so your thesis will evolve and gain definition as you obtain a better sense of where your argument is taking you.Tip: Check your thesis: Your thesis should be limited to what can be accomplished in the specified number of pages. If someone reads your essay and cannot identify where the thesis statement is located, take this as a sign that the thesis is not clear and/or is not as specific or strong as it can be.Make sure that the thesis stands out and can be easily interpreted. It is important that a writer uses the thesis to direct the creation of the essay, but it is also important that the writer is open to changing the thesis as necessary.A reader should be able to easily identify the thesis in any essay.
